Reclaim Lost Attic Space

Sunday, January 20, 2008

Most people do not even look at the attic as a room, because it is really just a space where cobwebs gather and boxes are stashed, but some people manage to look at their attics and see great untapped potential. Your attic, if there is enough space, could possible be converted into a bedroom, a sewing studio, a television room, or a whole myriad of other possibilities. The possibilities are endless, really, because the only things that matter are that you have enough attic space to play with, and that you have the drive to see what a little bit of attic remodeling can do for your home.

Remodeling in the attic can be a little bit difficult, because most attics are not built for any purpose other than for insulation and storage purposes, but that does not mean it would be completely impossible for you to take advantage of this unclaimed space and its untapped potential to see what attics have to offer. What king of room have you always wanted to have? Or do you just need extra closet space? What you do with your newly converted attic space is completely up to you, and the possibilities really are endless.

Prepare for some challenges when remodeling your attic, because you will be working alongside beams, piping and insulation fairly regularly throughout the process. You may even be working around a water heating installation, depending on where in the house yours is. So the first step in figuring out whether or not your attic can be converted is to talk to a professional. A professional can not only help you maneuver through the maze of hazards, but he or she can also accurately appraise whether or not a specific attic can stand a chance to be remodeled.

Your attic is actually a key area for energy loss, so if you can find a way to remodel your attic, you may be able to improve your home's ability to keep warm air in, which is a definite plus, especially in today's weather. Make sure you do not mess with any of your insulation, and try to add more warming agents to your room work so that the attic remains a warm place, keep the heat inside the house rather than letting it escape through the cracks in the walls and otherwise. Good luck with your attic remodel, there's no telling what great things you will find!
