In three weekends, you can transform your small bathroom into a spacious and luxurious oasis using a few simple small bathroom remodeling projects.
Week 1: Clear Small Bathroom Clutter
On the first weekend, eliminate clutter in your bathroom and reorganize. Get rid of anything you don’t need—outdated knick-knacks, art, or excess furniture. Completely empty your bathroom of everything, and return to it only what you absolutely need. Before you return your items, categorize them and buy any storage boxes or containers that you might need to make them more accessible. The less visible your products are, the mores spacious your bathroom will feel. Extra towel bars and a wall hook for your favorite fluffy robe are also inexpensive and easy-to-install organizational items that can add space. Finally, give your bathroom a thorough cleaning—floor, walls and ceiling—to make it shine before you return your belongings to it. Don’t forget those dreadful baseboards too.
Week 2: Give That Bathroom A Splash of Color
The thorough cleaning that you gave your bathroom on the first weekend will come in handy the next weekend during your second small bathroom remodeling project—a new paint job. Since the walls are clean, all you need to do is consult an expert at your local home and garden store for advice on any other preparation you might need to do before you paint, such as removing the gloss on the old paint. When deciding on a paint color, keep in mind that a pale color from the cool end of the spectrum will make the bathroom brighter and can also be enhanced with a stencil or decorative finish. Or you could avoid paint altogether and try water-resistant wall paper in a light shade or pattern. A small bathroom is the perfect place to test your wallpapering skills. Even a decorative border paper would be a nice accent that could also be used to expand the ceiling if it’s done in a corresponding shade. When the paint is dry, don’t forget to add accents that will add even more light to the space, such as a light-colored rug, shower curtain, window covering, or towels.
Week 3: Improve Bathroom Lighting
Now that the natural light in your small bathroom has been enhanced, it’s time to move onto your third small bathroom remodeling project—enhancing artificial light. Utilizing artificial light is an important part of brightening up any small bathroom. New light fixtures with extra bulbs, brighter bulbs, or clear instead of frosted glass globes can add a tremendous amount of light to a small, dark space. Having extra outlets installed can also allow for additional lighting, such as lamps or wall sconces. Wall sconces, which are typically placed on either side of the mirror above the sink, not only produce light but also add a decorative touch. Recessed lighting can also illuminate dark corners of your bathroom. The key to effective lighting, however, is moderation and a nice diffusion of light. Choose very wisely, as artificial lighting can be one of the trickiest yet most crucial small bathroom remodeling projects you will encounter.
