Things To Think About When Remodeling A Basement

Remodeling a basement can be a way to add another room to your home.  Remodeling a basement is also a good way to add storage to your home.  Some people turn their basement into a new den, living room, recreational room, guest room.  Some simply turn it into a storage room and laundry room.  What you do with this room is completely up to you.  There are so many options to choose from.  It’s like a room with a clean slate that can become anything you want it to be.

Once you decide what purpose your basement will serve, then you need to come up with a design plan and budget.  Design plans and budgets are essential in any remodeling project no matter how simple or complex.

Now you need to decide what you want in the room.  If it is a den or living room, you will need furniture that will be comfortable.  If it is a party room a bar and some bar stools would be in order.  Remodeling a basement can be a rather simple task if you know what you want out of the room.  Just keep in mind that more than likely anything you want in this room will have to come down the stairs.  You need to consider this first, before you buy that oversized sofa and entertainment center.

You may also need to do some rewiring in the house.  If you are remodeling a basement to be a place you will spend a lot of time, you will probably have to install air conditioning, heating, fans, cable, and several other electrical things.  You will most likely need to hire a contractor for this type of work.  Doing your own wiring may be cheaper, but it can be very dangerous.  You could short something out or even kill yourself.  Save yourself some trouble and hire a contractor.

You will also need to make sure your basement is well insulated from the elements.  Basements have a reputation for leaking.  Remodeling a basement can be costly, and you don’t want any leakage or moisture on this room that you just invested a chunk of money in. Once you inspect the basement for leaks, and get it all wired up, then the fun part begins. Now it is time for flooring, walls, and décor.

Many people prefer carpet for the floor of a cool basement, but if you have moisture issues, you may want to consider tile or other flooring.  Damp carpet can get moldy, which is not healthy.

Depending on what kind of walls you have in your basement, you may be able to paint or put up wall paper.  You need to choose a color that goes well with your theme.  If you are making a family room, you should choose a color or design that is neutral or warm.  If you are creating a game room, then bright colors or team colors is appropriate.  There are lots of choices to consider.

The last thing to remember is décor.  You want to decorate accordingly to what you design.  If you have a southwest design, you don’t want dolphins and dragons.  If you feel completely lost, hire a decorator to design your basement.  They will well worth the money. Remodeling a basement can be a fun project if you get creative with it. A designer can work with you or independently to make this room your dream room.
