Do It Yourself Remodeling How-To

Do it yourself remodeling is the privilege of every homeowner.  How often has the average apartment dweller dreamed of being the king of his own castle, able to put up walls or tear them down at will, to have the ability to install wall to wall carpeting in a cold bathroom, or instead take it out and replace it with beautiful wood flooring?  How often has he longingly wandered through the isles of the local big box home improvement warehouse, dreaming of the woodworking projects he would do, the painting he would attempt, and the landscaping that would grace the surroundings of his house.  Then, when the big day of homeownership has finally arrived, the realization sets in that do it yourself remodeling may be a privilege, but it can just as easily turn into the bane of a homeowner’s existence.

Fortunately, there are three easy steps to do it yourself remodeling that will all but guarantee success in the projects you will tackle.

Step 1: Create a Plan and Stick To It

First and foremost, it is imperative to define the scope of the project.  Sure, you know you simply wish to paint the dining room in a lovely mint green, but once you are the home improvement store, you see these great window treatments that would go great with the color you picked; after they make it into your cart, you also see the wallpaper border that would accentuate your high ceiling and so it finds its way into your cart; finally you realize that the flooring is a bit off, and some wood floor would be perfect to set off that nice color.  Before you know it, you have added three extra projects, namely interior decorating, wall papering, and floor installation to your to do list, and suddenly there is more to do than simply spend an afternoon painting.  A best case scenario will find you doing all these projects over the course of the next few weeks; a worst case scenario will find you putting them on the backburner, storing the wood flooring in a damp garage when it bends and becomes useless over the course of the year it spends in there.  For this reason, beware the siren song of the additional projects and project additions that appear to be beckoning from every aisle and shelf and instead remain single minded. You can always go back later to purchase that lovely border or wood floor!

Step 2: Plan Expenses

Secondly, plan your finances.  Shop around for great bargains and specials.  If you do are planning on doing a big project, such as painting the outside of your home, for example, wait until the local big box home improvement store has a sale on paint, and then stock up.  These savings and any rebates that may be available may easily save you hundreds of dollars!

Step 3: Don't Get Carried Away

Third, be realistic.  If the job looks like it is getting out of hand, do not hesitate to call in reinforcements.  Sometimes this may be the help of willing friends who can spend an afternoon putting in that lawn that has been baking in the heat of your sidewalk.  Other times this may mean hiring a professional.

Summary

Do it yourself remodeling does not have to be an activity fraught with frustration and failure.  Follow these three easy steps and your next projects should be delightful and give you a sense of accomplishment rather than failure.
