Walkthrough A Typical Basement Remodel

A basement on a home is a great addition and that means that a lot of people have valuable space beneath their feet that is normally doing nothing more than housing the hot water heater and perhaps the washer and dryer.  This is all a terrible waste of wonderful space that can be used for a wide array of room ideas that so many people tend to overlook.  All one has to do is imagine the possibilities that are virtually endless when it comes to the space that is found in the basement.  A little imagination and time will make sure that a basement is an area that one can be proud of no matter what the occasion.  Of course some money does not hurt as well but the end result will more than make up for the expense and time that is involved.

Remodeling Basement Walls

The main matter when you are looking into basement remodeling or basement refinishing is the expected use for the room.  For the purpose of this discussion we will use a family game room as an example.  Now, for a family game room you would need as much room as possible.  This is a major consideration for most of the project because the amount of game equipment and such that you will put into the new place will be the big determining factor.  So then you will first need to decide how much in the way or materials that you will need.  First off is the walls.  Basements for the most part are actually concrete and that means some fancy foot work when it comes to covering the walls with something more appealing.  Furring strips are the first step in covering basement walls.  Furring strips are thin slats of wood that you will attach to the concrete walls using some sort of fastener like concrete nails or screws.  You will place them stud lengths apart so you will have something to attach the wall coverings too.  Now, the wall coverings should be either paneling or drywall.  Drywall is cheaper but takes a far amount of work whereas paneling is more expensive and requires less work.  This is a matter of personal choice and budget.

Remodeling Basement Floors

The floors are usually no problem as carpet can be laid on the floor very easy and if you are looking to go a bit cheaper then there is always the rubberized floor paint that makes clean up a lot easier in case of a spill.

Remodeling Basement Ceilings

Lastly you will need to consider how to handle the ceiling.  Most likely you will see that the existing ceiling is nothing more than floor wood.  There are two options in this area.  One is the drop ceiling with acoustic tiles and the other is simple drywall.  Both methods provide an excellent look but the drop ceiling is rather expensive and can be very difficult to install.  For the drywall ceiling the hardest part is getting the sheets themselves installed as they can be very heavy.  This is normally a job for more than one person to say the least.
