How to choose a contractor

Choosing a contractor is one of those subjects that discussions on home renovations return to again and again. But there is a very good reason for that. If your renovations are beyond the scope of do-it-yourself, then choosing the right contractor is vital for so many reasons.

Why is it so important? Well, unfortunately it is a business with many people who just pick up a saw and a hammer and decide to call themselves a contractor. Most businesses seem to have their share of bad apples, but it’s more than its fair allocation of those in the contracting business. Choosing a bad contractor can lose you money, leave you with unfinished or shoddy work or worst yet, and put yourself or family in danger because of faulty work.

Some people think this is fear mongering but it really isn’t.  Improper wiring can start fires, improper sealing has resulted in leakage and mold developing, and even worse horror stories about structures actually giving out abound.

So if we take into consideration the possible disastrous consequences of choosing the wrong contractor we have to decide how the best way is to determine who the effective contractors are.  There a few criteria you should see met before you hire a contractor. There are also questions you can ask the contractor himself.

The best way to find a reliable contractor is by straight referrals. Ask your friends or co-workers that have had to hire someone about what kind of experiences they have had. This will be an indicator than anything else you can research any other way.  If you can’t find a suitable referral though, don’t give up hope, there are still ways to protect yourself.

You should find a contractor who has done work on projects similar to what you’re proposing. If he says he has that kind of experience, don’t be afraid to ask for references. An honest contractor will have no problem providing them.  Also ask them if they are willing to have a written contract of the work to be done and under what financial terms. This is a way to protect yourself against improper work, or a contractor from disappearing from your money.

There are plenty of good contractors out there. It is essential though to protect yourself as it is your house and your money on the line. Never forget that you are hiring a contractor to work for you and don’t be ashamed to ask questions and get details. Do that and you should find someone efficient and trustworthy.
