Home Remodeling for the Beginner.

There was a time when the family would start looking for another home to buy when they started outgrowing the present one.  This is no longer the case. Home remodeling has become the solution.  Whether it is to renovate or expand the floor plan the home owner now uses a more economical way to accomplish the goal.  They check into home remodeling.

Contractors are still the way to go when it comes to major construction work such as adding another story above the existing one.  However, for the smaller jobs and not so small jobs the home owner can do many of the projects himself.  Home remodeling is not as difficult to accomplish as you may think.

One of the first rooms a home owner generally wants remodeled is the kitchen.  Kitchen and bathroom makeovers are a very popular do-it-yourself project.  The local home improvement stores carry a full line of cabinetry and hardware to do the job.  You can even get help at the service desks which will include a materials list and price sheet.  Many times the service desk can even print out different how-to guides for the home remodeling project.

You should keep a few things in mind when you decide to tackle a home remodeling job on your own.  The first thing to remember is never bite off more than you can chew.  In other words if you plan to remodel the only bathroom in the house, you may want to make sure it is something that can be done in a day or two.  Putting the bathroom out of commission for longer than that may pose a problem.

You will also want to divide the project up into stages.  The bathroom project mentioned above may include a new tub/shower, a new toilet, and a new vanity and sink.  You may decide while you are doing this that the floor could stand to be updated as well.  Make a list of everything you want to do in the room.  Then list the jobs in order of logical sequence.  It would not be wise to save the flooring for last.  The most logical final step would be the sink and vanity.  Painting the walls would be done before the floor is replaced so no paint goes on the new flooring.

Many home remodeling jobs never get completed due to a lack of funds.  Before starting any home remodeling job determine the cost.  This means all materials and any labor you may need.  If you need a plumber to come in to re-run pipes, this should be included.  Allow for shortages and unexpected issues when budgeting for a home remodeling project.  If you calculate to the exact penny and cut a much needed board too short, there is no magical board stretcher to fix it.  You will have to spend the money to buy another one.  Sometimes when replacing the flooring in a bathroom, the home owner discovers the sub-floor is rotted.  This unexpected issue can easily be taken care of it is was included in the “miscellaneous mishaps” part of the budget.  If it was not then you may find yourself with a great looking vanity with a hole in the center where the sink was supposed to go.

Do not be afraid to ask for help.  Many people offer all kinds of advice when it comes to a home remodeling project.  Talk to the ones who really know what they are doing.  Ask your friends and neighbors about any home remodeling projects they have done.  Pay close attention to the problems and issues they ran into with their projects.  You can learn quite a bit from another person's experiences.  If you can not find the answers you are looking for, the home improvement centers always have someone available to talk to.  They will explain in detail the steps you should take to complete your home remodeling project.
