Deciding whether a project in your home renovations is right for you to attempt yourself or if you need to hire it out to a contractor can be a difficult decision. There is lots of money to be saved in completing a project yourself, but sometimes its not worth the risk.
The first question to ask yourself is are you qualified to do the job. There are basic home repairs such as painting, cabinet hardware swapping, maybe light fixtures that just about anyone could do. If that’s all you’re tackling then sure, do it yourself, you’ll save money and enjoy working on your home yourself.
However, you have to figure as well what your time is worth. If you are a very busy person earning a good salary maybe it is cheaper to hire someone to do the work for you. Many home renovation jobs are much more time consuming than you would originally predict and can take large gaps of time out of your schedule that you may need elsewhere.
You really need to consider if you have the technical knowhow to complete a job. Unless you happen to be a plumber or an electrician any job involving those two things should be hired out to a professional. Messing around with wiring when you don’t know what you’re doing can be very dangerous as well as illegal in some places. Plumbers are expensive but not as expensive as the water damage a poorly done job can cause. Use your common sense and don’t overstep your own ability. Even if you have a garage full of tools and consider yourself a carpenter, you have to really ask yourself if you know how to properly erect an interior wall before you go about trying to do it.
Many people like to be independent and feel that they can anything to their house themselves that a trained contractor could do. But these people have been doing this, its their job, for years and years. If you are a doctor, you wouldn’t advise a contractor to operate on himself, would you? Its just like that. There are years of skill and training that go into having the knowledge to complete many home renovations, and if you don’t have them sometimes the work is better left to the trained professional.
