For many people, an attic is nothing more than a large empty space where boxes of less than important things can be stored.  We have all seen them, they are full of boxes that contain financial documents long past, clothes that no longer fit and the parade of projects that are planned but never finished.  So in essence, most people have a lot of wasted and very useful space above their house that could be used for a wide variety of things.  Of course that means that a lot of work will have to be done, but there is no substitute for making a semi-useless space into a fully functioning area that could bring great joy and comfort to a lot of people.  In the end it is a matter of whether or not you really want or need the space that is in the attic.  This is a decision that only you can make and that means that some choices are present.

First and foremost you should determine if you have the money to make this type of project happen.  Of course everything costs money and that means you will need to set a budget.  The size of the budget depends on the size of the project.  A complete over haul of the entire attic may run quite high in the money idea while a simple coat of paint and some pictures is next to nothing.  This all depends on what you are intending to do with the space and how much money you wish to invest in such a project.  You should be aware that more and more people are choosing to take the space that the attic provides and making sure that they use it for something useful.  This is not a certain thing because there are people who enjoy having game rooms and such and they consider that to be a fine use of the space.

Attics are normally not very good in the insulation department so that is something that you will have to consider when taking on this project.  Whether or not you add insulation depends on whether or not you plan on the space being used for people.  There is a matter of comfort because an attic can be very cold in the winter and very hot in the summer.  So if you are wanting the space to be an extra bedroom for example then you would need to make sure that the attic has the proper amount of insulation.  Then there is the matter of heating and cooling ducts.  These are not normally run to the attic when a home is built so you would need to decide whether you will run new duct work or just make other arrangements for heating and cooling.  This is essential for remodeling the attic in any home as there is always room for improvement and you may want to take several things into consideration before starting on the project.  Research is the best idea all the way around.
